Banksy, born July 28th, 1974, is a pseudonymous English-based street artist and political activist. Banksy’s artwork often combines dark humor, political commentary, and distinctive stenciling techniques. During a 2003 interview with the BBC, which resurfaced in November 2023, reporter Nigel Wrench inquired about Banksy’s real identity. In response, Banksy revealed that his given name is Robbie.
Banksy’s real name is Robin Gunningham; his close friends call him Robbie. He married Joy Millward in 2006. She is a former Labor parliamentary lobbyist. Millward hails from the West Midlands and served as a researcher for Labor MP Austin Mitchell. Later on, she established Principle Affairs, an advocacy organization for charitable causes, and it is believed that she encountered Gunningham in 2003. In 2006, they got married in Las Vegas, yet they are known to be private individuals, even among their neighbors. ‘Even the individuals with whom they occasionally converse are completely unaware of their true identity.’
Only individuals within the inner circle who have undergone a thorough screening process have knowledge of their true identity. Certain members of Joy’s family have not been informed about the identity of her spouse or his occupation.
In 2008, a photograph of an individual in Jamaica surfaced, purportedly depicting Banksy. Robin was born in Bristol, which is widely believed to be Banksy’s hometown. He attended Bristol Cathedral School and was raised in a middle-class family.
Robin’s father, Peter Gordon Gunningham, was a former contracts manager who had retired from his position in the Whitehall district of Bristol. Pamela Ann Dawkin-Jones, his mother, worked as a secretary for a company director. She was raised in the affluent area of Clifton. He also has an older sister named Sarah.
At the age of nine, Robin’s family relocated to a bigger residence on the same block. It was around this time that he spent his crucial developmental years and developed a keen interest in graffiti.
Banksy gained prominence through his street art, which often appears in public spaces, such as walls and buildings. His work is known for its social and political messages, addressing issues like war, capitalism, and inequality.
Banksy’s identity remains a closely guarded secret in public. This anonymity adds an air of mystery to Banksy’s persona. Banksy’s art has garnered international acclaim, and his pieces can be found in various cities around the world. Some of his works have been auctioned for significant amounts of money.
Banksy has directed documentary films. One notable example is “Exit Through the Gift Shop” (2010), which explores the world of street art and features Banksy’s perspective on the movement. Banksy’s art often reflects a critical view of societal issues, challenging norms and raising awareness about political and social injustices.
Banksy’s artworks achieved multiple record-breaking sales at auction. The highest-priced Banksy artwork ever sold at an auction was the renowned piece titled “Love is in the Bin,” which fetched a staggering £18.6 million GBP in 2021.
Banksy’s ability to use art as a medium for social and political commentary, combined with the mystery surrounding his identity, has contributed to his status as one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in contemporary art.
